How to Set Up Google Search Console

Google Search Console is the free dashboard that shows what Google actually sees on your site: which queries bring impressions, which pages are indexed, and what errors block crawling. Setup takes minutes: add your property, verify ownership (DNS, HTML file, or meta tag), and submit your sitemap. From then on, ranking data is yours instead of guessed.

In this guide

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool from Google that shows you exactly how Google sees your website — which keywords bring traffic, where you rank, and whether there are indexing issues. It's essential for both SEO and GEO.

What GSC Tells You

Which search queries bring you clicks and impressions
Your average position for each keyword (1-100)
Which pages Google has indexed (and which it has not)
Click-through rate (CTR) for your listings
Mobile usability issues and core web vitals
Sitemap submission and crawl errors

Step 1: Go to Google Search Console

Go to search.google.com/search-console and sign in with your Google account. If you have multiple websites, use an account you'll keep long-term.

Click 'Add a property'. Choose 'URL prefix' and enter your website address (e.g. https://yourbusiness.com).

Step 2: Verify Your Website

Google will ask you to prove you own the website. There are three methods:

1HTML file uploadEasy

Download the verification file from GSC -> upload it to your website root (public_html) -> click Verify in GSC.

2HTML meta tagEasy

GSC gives you a meta tag -> add it to your homepage head section -> click Verify.

3DNS TXT recordMedium

Add a TXT record to your domain DNS settings (e.g. Cloudflare, GoDaddy). Hardest to set up but verifies your entire domain at once.

Step 3: Submit Your Sitemap

A sitemap is a file (usually sitemap.xml) that lists all pages on your website. It tells Google which pages to index.

In GSC's left menu, click 'Sitemaps' -> enter 'sitemap.xml' -> click 'Submit'. If successful, you'll see 'Success' status and the count of discovered URLs.

If your website doesn't have a sitemap.xml, you need to generate one first. Most CMS platforms (WordPress, Shopify, Wix) auto-generate it. If not, use a free tool like xml-sitemaps.com.

How Visora Uses Your GSC Data

When you connect your Google account (GBP connection) in Visora, we automatically use the same authorization to read your Search Console data — no separate setup needed.

This data powers: Ranking Performance (tracks ranking changes), Page Optimizer (AI-generated title and meta suggestions), and SEO Score (updated daily). The prerequisite is that your website is verified in GSC.

Common Issues

GSC says I have no data?
Newly verified sites take 2-7 days to show data. GSC is not real-time — it updates once daily. If you have no data after a week, your site may not be indexed by Google yet.
Should I use www or non-www?
Use whichever version your website actually uses. If your site is at https://example.com, enter that. Don't add both — pick one canonical version.
Visora says "site_url_required"?
Add your website URL in Visora's Data Vault (Card 04). We need this to match it with your GSC property.
